My cat is drinking and urinating a lot – could she have a kidney problem?

Our question this week was:

I have a cat that is fully grown (6 years) but is still very “tiny”. Everybody always make the comment that your cat is sooo tiny-which I am fine with and never thought twice about it. I had a family member watch the cat and she noticed that my cat drinks a TON of water and urinating 5 to 6 times a day. She feels that is may have something to do with her kidneys. She thinks that something may be wrong with her kidneys because she is soo small.

Hi – thanks for your email Ed. You wrote that you have a petite cat that has been noted to drink and urinate more than what is possibly normal.

Someone suggested that she could have a kidney disease. That is a possibility. Drinking more and urinating more can be associated with kidney disease (and diabetes).

The medical term for drinking more is polydypsia and the term for urinating more is polyuria. I’d recommend reading this article called Polydipsia and Polyuria in Cats and taking her in to your vet for an examination and blood test to determine if either of these diseases are your cats problem.

A couple more articles that might be helpful to you are Diabetes in Cats and Chronic Renal (Kidney) Failure in Cats.

Best of luck!
